What voice commands can I use with my Roku streaming device?

We are making it easier to navigate your Roku® streaming device with voice capabilities that range from finding content on your favorite apps, to controlling your Roku TV system, to starting playback of movies and TV shows on The Roku Channel. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the types of voice commands you can use to interact with your Roku streaming devices.

Requirements

  • A Roku device with OS 9.4 or higher
  • A compatible control device:
    • Roku Voice Remote (Pro, Enhanced, or Touch)
    • Roku mobile app for iOS® or Android

Use voice commands

All Roku voice remotes and the Roku mobile app let you use push-to-talk voice commands, while select voice remotes, such as the Roku Voice Remote Pro, also let you use hands-free voice commands.

Push-to-talk voice

  • On any voice remote, press and hold the voice button microphone icon and speak your command. Release the button to execute.
  • If using the free Roku mobile app, tap the voice icon microphone icon speak, and tap the screen to finish.

For detailed push-to-talk instructions and guidelines, visit the article about using your voice to search and control your streaming device.

Hands-free voice

  • With your Roku Voice Remote Pro, move the slider located on the side of the remote to 'green' to turn on hands-free voice, and say "Hey Roku..." followed by your voice command. Hands-free voice is most useful for quick actions like "Hey Roku, pause" or "Hey Roku, turn off the TV".

Common commands

With voice search, you can easily find specific movies and TV shows, or your favorite actors and directors. You can also search by genre to browse a broader set of results.

To use hands-free voice, start the command with "Hey Roku...".

Search and play shows and movies

  • “find The Office”
  • “search for westerns with Clint Eastwood”
  • “show me comedies”

Ask questions about shows, movies, and actors

  • "What is Oppenheimer about?"
  • "How scary is The Shining?"
  • "Who is the best James Bond?”

Launch apps

  • "start Hulu"
  • "open Disney+"

Note: To select a highlighted menu item say "OK" or "Hey Roku, OK (for hands-free voice)"

Control playback

  • "rewind"
  • "pause"
  • "stop"

Control your TV

  • "Turn the volume up"
  • "Open live TV guide"
  • "Switch to HDMI 2"

Note: You cannot use voice commands to switch to a device you have assigned a custom name.

Find your remote

This feature will play a sound on your remote that allows you to find it. You can also trigger this feature from the Roku mobile app.

  • "Hey Roku where is my remote?"
  • "find my remote"

For more details, learn how you can locate your misplaced remote using lost remote finder.

Interact with music apps

Using voice commands with your Roku streaming device gives you quick access to your favorite music, live radio stations, popular podcasts, and more from Spotify, Pandora, and iHeartRadio. If you have a Roku TV, you can even use voice commands to search and control your music when the TV screen is off.

  • "play 106 K-M-E-L"
  • "play Daft Punk on Pandora"
  • "what song is this?"

Note: For more details about voice control of your music, and where you can find audio content, read about how to listen to music with voice commands.
