How to set up your Roku Outdoor Smart Plug SE

Roku Outdoor Plug

Your Roku® Outdoor Smart Plug SE connects to Wi-Fi® up to 300 feet away letting you turn on and off your outdoor devices from anywhere and track their energy usage. It even has a built-in light sensor to turn your smart plug off and on with the rising and setting of the sun.

Simply download and install the free Roku Smart Home app and use it to connect your smart plug to your wireless network. You will be controlling and automating your outdoor devices in no time.

What you need for setup

In addition to your Roku Outdoor Smart Plug SE, you will need the following:

  • Power: Your smart plug needs to connect to a GFCI power outlet.
  • Wi-Fi®: Your outdoor plug needs a wireless network connection with WPA/WPA2 security standard.
  • Smartphone or tablet: You will need to download and install the Roku Smart Home mobile app on your iOS® or Android mobile device to set up and control your outdoor plug.
  • Bluetooth: Your smart plug needs to connect to your mobile device with Bluetooth.

Before you begin, familiarize yourself with your outdoor plug including the location of the status light. It is also important to make note of the MAC address which is required should you need to contact Roku Customer Support.

Where to install your outdoor plug

Your smart plug needs to connect to a GFCI power outlet to output up to 120V/15A with many uses, including:

  • Control your outdoor lights: Access your smart plug from anywhere and power your outdoor devices.
  • Save electricity: Set a schedule for your smart plug to control when your devices turn on or off to conserve energy.
  • Trigger your smart plug: Create a device trigger that lets one Roku Smart Home device initiate an action on another Roku Smart Home device. For example, if your Roku Outdoor Camera SE detects motion, you can have it trigger your Outdoor Smart Plug to power on.

For the most effective weatherproofing, use the following guidelines when deciding where to put your Outdoor Smart Plug.

  • Aim the sockets down: To limit rain and snow from entering the power sockets, point your Outdoor Smart Plug towards the ground.
  • Keep the sockets off the ground: To avoid being submerged in heavy rain, keep the power sockets at least 6 inches above the ground.
  • Cover an unused socket: Anytime a power socket is not being used, insert the weatherproof socket cover.
