How to create a strong, unique password for your Roku account

When you set up a Roku® account, we recommend that you create a strong, unique password to safeguard your personal information. Whether you’re creating or changing your password, the following guidelines will make it harder for someone to access your account.

Good practices for creating a strong, unique password for your Roku account

  • Use a password manager: A password manager can generate strong, unique passwords, store, and even automatically fill in your passwords for you. There are free ones, like the built-in password managers in your web browser, and paid ones—trusted review sites can provide you with reputable recommendations.
  • Create a new, unique password: Don't reuse past or current passwords from other services for your Roku account.
  • Use memorable passphrases that only you know: consisting of a sequence of mixed words and characters with or without spaces, passphrases are easier to remember and more difficult to guess than a password made up of random, mixed characters (for example, "Iluv2walkmydogFran!" or "My 50 in TV hangs above a red brick mantle").
  • Use at least 8 characters.
  • Try including a complex mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols, especially where not expected.

Things to avoid when creating a password for your Roku account

  • Never use your email: Repeating your email as the password offers little security.
  • Avoid common phrases, names, or dates: including famous quotations, and song lyrics.
  • Do not use personal dates: personal dates like your birthday or an anniversary may be publicly available.
  • Do not use a keyboard pattern: creating a password based on a keyboard pattern (e.g., qwerty, asdfghjkl) is not a good idea.
  • Avoid writing down your password: if you need to write down your password, hide it carefully where no one will find it.
  • Never give your password to anyone: giving your password to someone, even a close friend or family member, increases the chance of it being accidentally exposed.
