How to use Google to control your Roku Smart Home devices

Google Assistant is the voice service from Google and is connected to the Google Home app, as well as other voice-activated devices like Google Nest Mini or Google Nest Hub. With Google Assistant you can easily and quickly control your Roku® Smart Home devices with your voice.

This article helps you integrate a Google Assistant-enabled device with your smart home device and provides some examples of voice commands you can use to control your smart home devices.

You can also use Google Assistant to control your Roku streaming devices.

What you need to get started


In addition to a compatible Roku Smart Home device, you will need the following:

  • A free Roku account
  • A Google Assistant-enabled device such as a Google Pixel phone, Google Nest Mini, Google Nest Audio, Google Nest Hub, and Google Assistant on Android or iOS, Android TV, Android Auto, etc.
  • The Google Home mobile app downloaded to your iOS® or Android device

How to set up Google Assistant


To control your smart home devices with Google Assistant, you need to link your Roku account to your Google account using the Google Home mobile app.

Use the following steps to link your Roku account and Google account.

  • Launch the Google Home mobile app on your smartphone
  • Tap Get started (Android) or Settings (iOS)
  • Select Works with Google
  • Tap the Magnifying glassSearch Icon in Roku Smart Home mobile app icon and search for Roku
  • Select Roku from the list
  • When prompted, sign in to your Roku account
  • Select Continue and follow the prompts to return to the Google Home app

Note: If you cannot sign in to your Roku account, learn what to do if you have forgotten your email address or password.

What to do if your Roku devices are missing in Google Home

If your Google account and Roku account are already linked, you can force Google Assistant to rediscover any devices by saying "Hey Google, Sync my devices"

What you can do with Google Assistant


With your Google Home app or Google-enabled device, use your voice to turn your smart home devices on, view a live video stream, and adjust light settings like color, brightness, and temperature.

Control your cameras

The live video stream from your camera can be viewed on a display device connected to Google Assistant like a Google Nest Hub.

Issue a command by saying "Hey Google" followed by:

  • Turn on your camera
    "Turn on living room"

  • Check if your camera is on
    "Is living room on?"

  • View the live stream
    "Show living room"

  • Stop the live stream
    "Stop"

Control your home monitoring system

You can use Google Assistant to check your Roku Home Monitoring system alarm modes or turn your alarm modes on and off.

Issue a command by saying "Hey Google" followed by:

  • Change your monitoring mode to Home
    "Arm monitoring to Home"
    "Arm security system to Home"
    "Set security system to Home"

  • Change your monitoring mode to Away
    "Arm monitoring to Away"
    "Arm security system to Away"
    "Set security system to Away"

  • Check your monitoring mode
    "Is my monitoring Armed?"
    "Is security system armed?"

  • Turn your monitoring alarm mode off
    "Disarm"
    "Disarm my monitoring system"

Note: You will need to speak your PIN aloud or enter it on a touchscreen to turn your monitoring alarm mode off. Changing to Home or Away mode will require a PIN if your Use for mode changes setting is turned on.

View your doorbell

Issue a command by saying "Hey Google" followed by:

  • View your the live stream
    "Show front door"

Adjust your lights

Issue a command by saying "Hey Google" followed by:

  • Turn your light on
    "Turn on bedroom light"
    "Turn on tv light strip"

  • Adjust brightness
    "Brighten living room light"
    "Set living room light to 50 percent"
    "Dim living room light by 75 percent"

  • Set temperature (candlelight, incandescent, warm white, cool white, daylight, and ivory)
    "Set bedroom light to ivory"
    "Set bedroom light to cool white"

  • Set color of light
    "Set office light to red"
    "Set movie room light strip to purple"

Turn on your plugs

Issue a command by saying "Hey Google" followed by:

  • Turn your plug on
    "Turn on kitchen plug"
