How to increase player memory with a micro SD card
Some older Roku streaming devices allow you to expand internal memory with a micro SD card, so you can install more apps from the Roku Streaming Store.
This article provides instructions on installing, formatting, and removing a micro SD card from your Roku streaming device.
Note: If you want to view photos, videos, and music, you need to use a USB device instead.
How to install a micro SD card
Use the following steps to install a micro SD card into your Roku streaming device.
- Remove the HDMI cable from the back of your device so you can access the micro SD card slot
- Insert the micro SD card into the back of your Roku streaming device
- You will hear a click as it locks into place
- Reinsert the HDMI cable back into your device
You will see a "micro SD card detected" message on your screen.
How to format a micro SD card
Use the following steps to format the micro SD card on your Roku streaming device.
Note: Any data already on the micro SD card will be erased after formatting.
- Select Format when the dialog “micro SD card detected” pops up
- Select Continue to begin formatting. Formatting will take a few minutes depending on capacity
- Select OK on the “Formatting complete” pop up once formatting has completed
- The Roku streaming device will now use the micro SD storage to install new apps
How to remove a micro SD card
Removing the micro SD card will not cause any apps you have purchased or installed to be lost. However, without the micro SD card they will need to be downloaded again from the Roku Streaming Store to access them again.
Use the following steps to remove your micro SD card
- Remove the HDMI HDMI cable from the back of your device so you can access the micro SD card slot
- Push the card in and it will pop out
- Reinsert the HDMI cable back into your device
Can I move the same micro SD card on another Roku streaming device?
Yes, but you cannot move the channels stored on the micro SD card from one Roku streaming device to another. If you move a card to a different Roku streaming device, it will prompt to format the storage device.
