How do I listen to music when the screen on my Roku TV™ is off?

Enabling a feature on your Roku TV called Fast TV Start lets you listen to music, live radio, and podcasts when the TV screen is off, or wake your TV and perform various actions using voice commands.

How does Fast TV Start work?

When Fast TV Start is enabled, your Roku TV always maintains the connection with the built-in speakers, even when the TV is in standby. This allows you to use the speakers at any time, regardless if the screen is off or on.

  • Note: Fast TV Start uses more power than normal standby and overrides default power settings.

How do I enable Fast TV Start?

You can enable Fast TV start on your Roku TV at any time using the instructions below:

  • Press the Home button home button on Roku remote on your Roku TV remote.
  • Scroll up or down and select Settings.
  • Select System, followed by Power.
  • Select Fast TV Start.
  • Highlight Enable 'Fast TV Start' and check the box to enable it.

Listen to music, live radio, or podcasts when the TV screen is off

When Fast TV Start is enabled, you can say a command to a Roku voice remote or the Roku mobile app for iOS® and Android, and begin listening to music, live radio, or a podcast while the screen on your Roku TV remains off.

When you are ready, simply press and hold the Microphone button microphone icon and speak naturally saying a command like, "listen to classical music" or "play today's hits". After a moment, you will hear the audio content played from the built-in speakers in your Roku TV.

While the TV screen remains off, you can control the volume with voice commands like "set volume to 50%", "mute", or "volume up", or control playback by saying something like "pause", "resume", or "next". You can even interact with streaming services using commands like "thumbs up/down", or "what song is this?".

Wake your Roku TV using voice commands

When Fast TV Start is enabled, you can wake your Roku TV using a direct command, or say something more complex to wake your Roku TV and perform another action like launching a streaming channel or switching an input. To wake your Roku TV, press and hold the Microphone button microphone icon and say something like "power on" or "turn on" to power on your Roku TV, or do more with a voice command like "launch The Roku Channel" or "switch to Blu-ray player".

How do I turn off the TV screen when audio is already playing?

When Fast TV Start is enabled on your Roku TV, you can easily turn off the TV screen after starting playback from a voice command on select audio channels.

Note: Some audio channels, such as Spotify, do not support this functionality.

  • Press and hold the Microphone button microphone icon and say a command like "play classic rock".
  • After the channel launches, you will see playback details on screen.
  • When you want to turn off the TV screen, press the Star button star button on Roku remote on your Roku remote.
  • Scroll up or down and select Turn off display.

You can also turn off the screen with a voice command like "turn off display" or "turn off the screen".

After the TV screen turns off, sound will continue through the built-in speakers in your Roku TV. When you want to turn the TV screen back on, simply press the Power button power button on Roku remote on your Roku remote or use a voice command like "power on my TV".

Why do notifications appear when the screen is off?

When Fast TV Start is enabled and the screen on your Roku TV is off, notifications may appear as confirmation that your voice command is recognized and being performed. These notifications are intentional and there is no way to turn them off.
