Roku devices are designed to run the latest software. Your Roku TV or streaming player checks for updates when it turns on and every 24–36 hours. Updates usually install automatically without interrupting use.
If an update fails or gets stuck, follow the steps below to diagnose and fix the issue.
If your Roku device shows an update error, wait a few minutes and try again. Roku update services may be temporarily unavailable. If Roku is aware of a larger outage, an alert will appear on the Roku support website. Try updating again once the outage is resolved.
Connecting to the wrong Wi-Fi network can prevent updates.
Go to Settings > Network on your Roku device and confirm the network name is correct. If you are unsure, reconnect using the correct wireless name and password.
Your Roku device must have a stable internet connection to update.
Use a phone or computer connected to the same router and open a website to confirm the internet is working. If other devices work but the Roku update still fails, the Wi-Fi signal may be too weak.

Connecting your Roku player directly to the router with an Ethernet cable provides a faster and more reliable connection and often resolves update failures.
If you use Roku wireless speakers, a wireless soundbar, or a subwoofer:
Wireless audio devices update at the same time as the Roku they are paired with.
Try connecting your Roku device to a different internet source, such as a mobile hotspot. If the update works on another network, the issue is likely your home internet connection. If problems continue, contact Roku Support for help.
