How do I enable HDMI-CEC and ARC on my TV?

HDMI‑CEC and ARC let your TV and connected devices “talk” to each other, so you can control your TV with your Roku remote, or send your TV’s audio to your Roku speakers or soundbar. This guide shows you how to turn these features on and get your setup working quickly.

Enable CEC on your Roku TV

  • Press Homehome button on Roku remote on your Roku TV remote
  • Scroll and select Settings
  • Select System
  • Select Control other devices (CEC)
  • Scroll and highlight System audio control
  • Check the box to enable System audio control
  • Highlight 1-touch play
  • Check the box to enable 1-touch play

Enable ARC on your Roku TV

  • Enable CEC as described in the steps above.
  • Scroll and highlight ARC
  • Check the box to enable ARC

How to enable CEC / ARC by TV operating system

Many TV brands share the same underlying OS (for example: Fire TV OS, Android TV / Google TV). So the menu steps are often the same, even for different brands. Use the section that matches your TV’s OS.

1. Fire TV (various brands)

Enable CEC:

  • Press HOME on remote > Settings > Display & Sound > HDMI‑CEC Devices > turn on options such as 1‑Touch Play and Power Control
    • Enable ARC: After CEC is on: Settings > Display & Sound > ARC > check Enable HDMI ARC.

2. Android TV / Google TV

Enable CEC:

  • Home screen > Settings > Inputs or External devices control > turn on Control Other Devices (CEC).
    Enable ARC:
  • Settings > Sound/Audio > Audio Output > select HDMI ARC / eARC.

3. Manufacturer‑specific (not Fire TV/Android TV/Google TV)

Here are some popular brands and their names for CEC (you’ll only need them if your TV uses the brand’s own software):

  • Vizio CEC: Settings > All Settings > System > CEC > Turn CEC On
  • Samsung Anynet+ (HDMI‑CEC): Settings > All Settings > Connections > External Device Manager > turn On Anynet+.
  • LG SIMPLINK: Settings > General > SIMPLINK (HDMI‑CEC) > On. Then Sound > Sound Out > HDMI ARC.
  • Sony BRAVIA Sync: Settings > Watching TV > External Inputs > BRAVIA Sync settings > turn On. Then Set Audio Output > eARC mode to Auto if available.

If you don't see your TV's brand here, check the manufacturer's website for the steps to enable CEC and ARC. For help, contact the manufacturer.

Troubleshooting

How can I control my TV using my Roku remote?

You likely need to turn HDMI‑CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) on. This lets devices connected via HDMI share commands. For example, you can use your Roku remote to change the volume on the TV.

How to fix:

  • Go to your TV’s Settings and look for something like HDMI Control, CEC, Control other devices etc. See above for steps specific to your TV, or refer to the manufacturer's website for help.
  • Turn it On.
  • Make sure the HDMI cable is connected firmly and between compatible devices.
  • Restart your TV and HDMI device if it doesn’t immediately work.

My TV picture works but there's no sound from my soundbar

You likely need to enable ARC (Audio Return Channel) or eARC. ARC allows your TV to send sound back out via HDMI to a soundbar or external audio receiver, so you don’t need a second audio cable.

How to fix:

  • Plug your soundbar (or receiver) into the TV’s HDMI port labelled ARC or eARC.
  • In your TV Settings > Sound/Audio, make sure output is set to HDMI ARC (or eARC).
  • Ensure CEC is enabled too (because many TVs require CEC ON for ARC to work).
  • If you see eARC mode set it to Auto if available.

I turned on CEC/ARC but things still act weird (devices don’t turn off together, inputs don’t switch)

  • Unplug all HDMI devices and the TV for ~1 minute, then plug in only the TV, turn it on then plug in your HDMI audio device. Next, then plug in all other HDMI sources.
  • Make sure your HDMI cables are good quality and fully inserted.
  • If you have a sound receiver in between your TV and devices, complexity may cause issues. Sometimes connecting devices directly to TV helps.
  • Check for TV firmware updates. Some CEC/ARC issues are fixed via an update.

What to do if all else fails

  • Is your device (soundbar/receiver) connected to the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port?
  • Is HDMI‑CEC turned On on your TV?
  • Is HDMI‑ARC sound output selected in TV settings?
  • Have you disconnected and re‑plugged devices in the correct order?
  • Is your HDMI cable properly plugged in and in decent condition?
  • Is your TV firmware up to date?
  • If you still have issues, contact your TV's manufacturer and note connected devices to get help.
