How to set up your Roku voice remote to control your TV

Your Roku Voice Remote can do more than just control your Roku streaming player. Some models can also turn your TV on and off and adjust the volume. If you’re unsure which Roku remote you have, visit the Roku website for a remote comparison chart.

When you first set up your Roku device, you’ll be asked if you want your Roku remote to control your TV’s power and volume.

Before you start:

  • Make sure your TV volume is turned up
  • Point your Roku voice remote directly at your TV

What to expect:

When you set up your Roku voice remote to control your TV’s power and volume, your TV will play a few sounds while your device finds the right settings. You’ll select whether you can hear the music, and your Roku player will finish setup automatically. Simply follow the prompts on your screen.

Note: Your Roku remote may not let you control all TV models. Some TVs only allow volume control, not power. Make sure HDMI-CEC is turned on in your TV’s settings.

Set up TV controls after device setup

If you have finished setting up your Roku device, you can still add TV controls later.

  • Press Homehome button on Roku remote on your Roku remote
  • Go to Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes
  • Choose your voice remote, then select Set up remote for TV control
  • Follow the on-screen steps

Use hands-free voice controls (Voice remote pro only)

If you have a Roku Voice Remote Pro (1st or 2nd edition), you can control your TV without pressing any buttons.

  • On your TV, make sure CEC is enabled in the settings. Each TV brand has its own name for CEC controls (LG SIMPLINK, Samsung Anynet, etc). Search online for instructions for your TV or contact the manufacturer.

    • If using a Roku TV, go to Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC). Turn on One-Touch Play

  • On your Roku device, navigate to Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes > Voice Remote and set up your voice remote again

  • Say a simple test command like, “Hey Roku, what time is it?” to check that hands-free voice works.

  • Try these voice commands:
    1. “Hey Roku, turn on the TV.”
    2. “Hey Roku, turn up the volume.”
    3. “Hey Roku, set volume to 11.”
    4. “Hey Roku, turn off the TV.”

Speak naturally, no need to shout or slow down your speech.

Note: Not all TVs fully support CEC. Some commands might work, while others might not. Check your TV’s manual for details.

Fix problems with TV controls

If your Roku remote isn’t controlling your TV correctly, try these fixes:

  • No sound or music during setup: Make sure your TV volume is up and not muted.
  • Connect your player directly: If your Roku player is connected to a soundbar or receiver (AVR), temporarily connect it directly to your TV during setup.
  • Still not working: Go through the setup steps again or re-enter your TV brand.

Note: Roku remotes can’t directly control other devices (like your soundbar or receiver). However, if everything is connected through HDMI and HDMI-CEC is turned on, your Roku player can control sound.
