How to install the Roku mobile app

The Roku mobile app is a free application for iOS® and Android that turns your mobile device into the ultimate streaming companion. Watch hundreds of hit movies, TV shows, and more when you are on the go, directly from The Roku Channel tab, or turn your mobile device into a control center for your Roku streaming player or Roku TV. You can also share personal photos and videos on your TV, listen privately with your headphones, and more.

Which Roku devices are supported?

The Roku mobile app supports Roku devices running Roku OS version 6.2 or later, although some features are not available on all devices. Certain features may require signing in to your Roku account. If your Roku device has been disconnected for an extended period of time, you can have it manually check for a software update.

Connect the Roku mobile app

  • Add the Roku app to your mobile device. Download the Roku App on your mobile device via the App Store or the Google Play store. The Roku app is compatible with iOS version 11.0 or higher and Android version 5.0 or higher
  • Ensure that both your mobile device and Roku device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network
  • Launch the Roku mobile app on your mobile device
  • The app will automatically search for any Roku devices on your network. Wait for the discovery screen to load
  • After your Roku device appears on the list, tap on it to connect

If you are unable to get your Roku device to connect to the same network, try resolving connectivity issues. If your Roku device does not appear on the discovery screen, learn why the Roku mobile app may not be able to find your Roku device.

Can I use a third-party Roku mobile app?

While it is possible to use third-party apps to control your Roku device, we strongly advise against doing so for security reasons.

Allow third-party apps to control your Roku device

  • Use the directional pad on your Roku TV remote to scroll down and select Settings
  • Navigate to System > Advanced system settings
  • Select Control by mobile apps
  • Select from the following settings based on the level of access you need:
    • Limited - Control by mobile apps is restricted to text input, app launches and accessing your activity within the app itself. The app can only control devices that are part of your Wi-Fi network
    • Enabled - Your Roku device can always be controlled by mobile apps, but it will only respond to commands from devices that are connected to the same local network
    • Permissive - Any device within and outside your network could potentially send all commands to your Roku device

Notes:

  • The Roku mobile app is available in English, French, and Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.
  • The Roku mobile app is available in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, France, Guatemala, Honduras, Ireland, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
  • Streaming content directly from The Roku Channel in the mobile app is only available in the United States.
